"The world to me is a big theater where my characters have roles to enjoy with their dramatic, mysterious, joyful, or even grotesque images. My theater on canvas continues to present new, seemingly strange performances with the same enthusiasm and excitement." — Sam Zumian
Sam Zumian is a Los Angeles–based painter and graphic artist whose multidisciplinary practice spans oil painting, etchings, printmaking, and monochromatic works. Born in 1953 in Armenia, Zumian constructs a distinct philosophy of existence through his art, bridging classical technical execution with contemporary investigations into the human condition.
Driven by a quest to claim the aesthetics of the unconscious and the raw laws of nature operating beneath conscious thought, Zumian strips away elaborate narrative plots to focus on one or two central figures embodying crucial, elemental forces. His canvases function as a theatrical stage where characters dangle from ropes, scale ladders, grasp onto spinning carousels, or move through passionate crowds. These dynamic, tension-filled movements keep the viewer in a state of continuous engagement—constantly questioning scenario, perspective, and motion.
Zumian's entire body of work maintains a striking aesthetic signature: visual creations that are simultaneously clear, deeply mysterious, and subtly, deviously dreadful. By connecting the technical achievements of classical art traditions with modern visual inquiries, Zumian crafts timeless, endlessly enriching compositions that reveal new layers of meaning with every viewing.
