German-born artist Ella S. creates intricate, tactile paintings that operate as portals into fantasy, symbol, and story. Raised in a family of artists, Sarkisyan’s early creative immersion led her to Yerevan, Armenia, where she honed her foundational craft at the Studio Art School before earning her Master of Fine Arts from Yerevan State University. Following her relocation to the United States in 1995, her debut at the Armenian Center of Contemporary Experimental Art marked the beginning of a prolific international career.
Sarkisyan’s practice is defined by a sophisticated approach to texture, tone, and symbolic narrative. Building rich surfaces with distinct values, her canvases weave classical iconographies, literary echoes, and embedded phonetic phrases into elegant, mysterious compositions. As curator and art director Nicola Eremita notes, her work draws on the sensuality and mysticism of classical culture and Italian literature, striking an impressive visual harmony that reflects "the miracle of the renewal of life as well as the creativity of the artist."
Now based in Los Angeles, Sarkisyan has garnered widespread critical acclaim across North America and Europe. Her distinguished honors include a Silver Medal at the 6th Venice Biennale Contemporary Art Exhibition (III Millennium Gallery Pavilion), recognition at the RomArt International Biennial, a West Coast Competition First Place award, and a Certificate of Recognition from the California Legislature Assembly. Through her seamless fusion of modern design sensibility and timeless mythology, Sarkisyan continues to craft compelling, narrative-rich works held in esteemed public and private collections globally.
